ASF ASIAN SURFING

CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024

The Asian Surfing Championships was originally launched in 2011 by the Indonesian based surf management company called the “Asian Surf Cooperative”, to develop the skills of surfers through competition, bring media attention to formerly unfamiliar regions and aid in the advancement of surfing locally and regionally throughout Asia.

With the formation of the Asian Surfing Federation in 2019, the ASF and the Asian Surf Co, have agreed that the ASF will assume the name “Asian Surfing Championships” for all future championships, while recognising the dedicated work and effort put in by the Asian Surf Co, in past and in the present. The first ASF-run ASC was held in Shantou, China, in 2019, but the global outbreak of COVID-19 forced the suspension of all championships. Undeterred, the ASF is poised to make history once again in 2023 in the Maldives, with the full support and participation of the Asian surfing community.

The objective of ASC is to create a championship that will allow the best talents of Asia to showcase their talents and compete for glory. Furthermore, ASC is the place where the surfing communities around Asia come together to share their experience and knowledge with their counterparts, which would further enable the development and progression of surfing in Asia.

Host Island
Thulusdhoo is a local island which could be reached from the Male’ international airport via speed boat in 20 – 25 minutes. Thulusdhoo is famous for its world class and famous surf break called “Cokes” or Randhaa Raalhugandu (local name). Cokes (shallow reef break) has two really good sections that provide consistent, if brief, shelter from the heat of the Maldivian sun. The steep takeoff on the outside section guarantees quick shade time, followed by an even wider tube on the inside due to the shallow reef. The location of the break makes Cokes consistently bigger than the nearby spots, but that benefit comes with the price of being more susceptible to the southwest wind.
